After service
Retired working dogs are placed, not retailed
People who search police K9 for sale sometimes want a retired dog. The official route there is adoption.

The federal rule for military working dogs
Federal law at 10 U.S.C. 2583 governs transfer and adoption of military animals, including military working dogs. Its order of preference runs from the animal's previous handlers, to other persons or organizations capable of humanely caring for the animal, to law-enforcement agencies. The statute also provides that transfers may be made without charge and gives former handlers preference for retired working dogs unless that would not serve the dog's best interests.
Where the dogs go
The statute directs retired working dogs to the 341st Training Squadron or another U.S. location for adoption. The 37th Training Wing describes the dogs available as typically those that retired from handler-aid work, had medical conditions or did not progress in training, and gives an adoption contact on its military working dog expo article.
Police dogs at retirement
Practices for retired police dogs vary by agency and state, and this guide found no single national rule. Many go to their handlers. If you hope to adopt one, contact the agency itself rather than a listing site, and expect questions about your home, other pets and experience.
What an adopter should plan for
- Possible health conditions linked to a working life, so budget for veterinary care.
- Behavior shaped by years of one handler, which may need patient adjustment.
- Insurance and housing rules that apply to the dog's breed and history.
- No promise that the dog will protect you; its training was for work with its handler.
